Ayurveda, meaning the science of life, is a holistic approach towards a positive lifestyle. Developed some thousands of years, it gives importance to both the preventive as well as curative approach to disease. The Panchakarma is a unique method in Ayurveda combining five procedures of purification to eliminate the accumulated toxins from the body and invigorate the self-healing abilities of the body. It also increases the body acceptability to other therapies such as rejuvenation (Rasayana) and aphrodisiac (Vajikarana). The intensive procedures of the detoxification cleanse, strengthen, heal, and revitalize the physiology. It balances the tri-doshas bringing back vigour, vitality, and quality of life.

The Panchakarma comprises of five major therapies for the elimination of the vitiated Doshas from the body: Therapeutic vomiting (Vamana), Purgation (Virechan), Enema (Basti), Therapeutic Errhine ( Nasya) and Detoxification Of Blood (Rakta Moksha). These therapies are helpful in relieving from the chronic diseases and improving the mental and physical health. The whole procedure is explained down in detail:

Pre-Purification Procedures:

Before the Panchakarma, the body needs to be prepared to go through the prescribed method of eliminating the toxins. The first step is oleation, in which the essential oils are ingested and applied for loosening and mobilizing of the accumulated toxins from the body. It includes a herbalised oil massage (abhyanga). Sweating or sudation (Swedana), is related to the production of heat in the body. This procedure allows for the relaxation of the body and releasing of the impurities from the body through the sweat glands.

  • Therapeutic vomiting (Vamana):- This procedure is used to eliminate the Kapha causing excess mucus. The congestion of the lungs results in the repeated attacks of cold, cough, bronchitis, and asthma. Many a times, it is also used for releasing the emotions suppressed in the Kapha areas of the lungs and stomach. It is very effective eliminating the mucus and after this procedure, the person feels relaxed and free to breathe having lightness in the chest, clear appetite, good voice, and clear thinking.
  • Purgation (Virechan):- Excess of bile and pitta is secreted and accumulated in the liver, gall bladder, and small intestine causing skin rashness, skin inflammation, acne, jaundice, nausea, and chronic attack of fever. In such situation, the therapeutic purgation is very effective. It helps to relieve from the excess pitta causing bile disturbance in the body. During this procedure, the patients are advised to avoid the foods that can aggravate the humour.
  • Enema ( Basti):- Colon is the predominant site of the Vata. During the Enema, a liquid preparation of herbal oils and other herbal products are introduced into the body through rectum. For all the Vata disorders, Basti is the best treatment and needs to be done for a prescribed period. It is very effective in relieving from constipation, chronic fever, distention, kidney stone, heart pain, sexual disorders, etc.
  • Therapeutic Errhine ( Nasya):- The bodily humours accumulated in the throat, sinus, nose or head areas are eliminated through the nasal passage. Nose is the doorway to the consciousness and the brain, thus the nasal administration is done through the Nasya. It is generally prescribed for breathing problems, migraine headache, sinus disorder, convulsion, and certain ear and eye problems.
  • Detoxification Of Blood (Rakta Moksha):- Bodily toxins accumulated in the gastrointestinal tract are absorbed in the blood and circulated throughout the body causing several problems. This includes hypertension, infections, and other circulatory problems. Hence, the Detoxification Of Blood is performed to eliminate the toxins from the blood. The blood purifying therapies involve herbs, cold water or gem therapy.
