Ayurveda, meaning ‘The Science of Life’, is a 5000 years old medical system that originated in India. This medical system developed and evolved separately from the modern medicine. It considers body in its entirety putting emphasis on harmony between body, mind and consciousness.

All the Ayurvedic treatments and knowledge are passed on from the Vedas through the oral tradition. This later developed into a full-fledged medical system, in which the sages noted down their experiences as well as observations in a text known as Ayurveda. It was observed that only a few changes in the lifestyle and diet could bring many positive refinements in the overall human behavior and personality.

Ayurveda sees body, mind and soul as interrelated to each other harmonizing the physical, biological and neurological systems of the body. Further, Ayurveda has been proved beneficial in treating and preventing many physical and mental disorders. So, let us look at some of the Ayurveda-Targeted Body Treatments:

  • Padaghata (Body Massage With Feet) - This massage treatment is performed by skillful therapists for about one hour. In this process, the body is massaged through soles of feet rather than hands. The therapist balances himself with the help of a rope tied on the ceiling while massaging at the same time. It is deeply relaxing and helps in relieving down bone and joint pains. It also helps to remove excessive fat and toxins from the body.
  • Talapotichil (Medicinal Paste Head Treatment) - It is an hour’s treatment involving two therapists that wrap the head with a medicinal paste known as Talapotichil. A 3 cm thick paste is applied on the head and then covered with leaves. The paste is removed from the head after 30 minutes. It is affective for many ailments afflicting the head such as insomnia, mental stress, migraine, headache, depression, hyperactive conditions, dandruff and hair fall.
  • Shiroabhyanga (Head-Face-Neck Massage) - This soothing massage is done using rare herbal oils. The scalp massage is beneficial for dry scalp and reduces the risk of baldness as well as premature hair loss. The forehead massage improves the concentration, eyesight, facilitates sleep and reduces headache. The facial massage cures problems related to tinnitus, jaw aches and sinusitis. Further, besides increasing the oxygen supply to the brain, Shiroabhyanga also improves the blood circulation.
  • Pada Abhyangam (Leg & Feet Medicated Oil Massage) - The massage is for lower leg and feet. In this, the acupressure points are stimulated with the help of medicated oil. It is very beneficial in relaxing and soothing the eyes to induce sleep. It is also helpful in improving the skin texture, smoothening cracked skin, reducing hypertension and relieving tiredness of feet and legs.
  • Kativasti (Medicated Oil Treatment For Body Aches) – Targeted around the waist area, Kativasti is beneficial for spinal ailments, back pain, muscular pain, lumbar sponylosis, etc. In this treatment, a reservoir of black gram dough is placed on the lower back. This leak proof reservoir is rectangular and is poured with lukewarm medicated oil. The oil is kept there for 30 minutes and after that the body is massaged with the same oil. This treatment is also beneficial for neck and knee joints.
  • Upanaha Sweda (Medicated And Herbal Paste Pain Relieving Massage) - In this treatment a paste is applied on the whole body and is used to treat the pain associated with body swelling. The paste is made from anti-inflammatory and pain relieving seeds crushed with medicated oils. However, herbs can also be mixed with wheat and rice floor. A layer of thick warm paste is placed on the affected area and then wiped off. It is very helpful in relieving muscle and tissue swelling as well as spot pains.
