In this age of digitalization and availability of everything at the end of fingertips, sedentary lifestyle has become a norm and the commonest reason for adding up of kilos to one’s body weight.

Obesity is one of the lifestyle diseases, which leads to numerous other complications. The causes that lead to obesity may be health issues like hormonal disorders and hereditary reasons, unhealthy food habits, inadequate physical activities or side-effects of medications.

In Ayurveda, obesity is considered to be the result of imbalances of three substances or energies (doshas) in the body and is known as Meda Roga.

Ayurvedic diet is a dietary plan that details on how, when and what to eat to improve your health, boost your immunity, and prevent the body from diseases.

Five fundamental principles to tackle obesity:

  • Determine which constitutional type (dominant dosha) your body falls in.   The best way to know your constitutional type is to visit an Ayurveda practitioner.  After confirming the dominance of dosha, the diet is charted as Vata diet, Pitta diet and Kapha diet.
  • Yoga, an ascetic discipline, which includes meditation, breath control, and body postures practiced for health and relaxation. Surya Namaskar, a set of 12 sequential poses or asanas is a complete exercise to lose weight.
  • Eat slowly and chew well and take time to savor the taste. At every meal, try to incorporate six rasas or tastes viz. sweet, salty, sour, bitter, pungent and astringent.  Avoid eating cold and stale food. And be acquainted with hunger signals to avoid overeating.
  • Adequate intake of water.  Ayurveda follows individualized approach of fluid intake. This also is determined by the dominance of doshas in one’s body.
  • Restful sleep is a natural time for rejuvenation and detoxification.  Follow a routine. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks.

If the goal is to lose weight, follow these basic principles and be self-disciplined.
