Ayurvedic Treatment For Pain Relief

In Ayurveda, different kind of treatments is advised for different kinds of pains. When a patient approaches an Ayurvedic Doctor, the first thing that the doctor does is to ascertain the type of pain, based on what he sees, he prescribes the relevant treatment.


  • Rheumatic Arthritis or Ama Vata in Ayurveda, is caused due to low digestive fire, due to which ama is retained within the body. For effective treatment, ama is removed from the body.
  • For pains resulting from trauma usually Vishagarbha is generally prescribed for external application over the region when the pain is felt.

Ayurveda and Yoga are two techniques that can help restore the normal functioning of ligaments within no time. Ayurveda uses the following techniques for effective pain treatment.



Abhyanga:- Abhyanga is a full body massage that involves effective treatment of the joints and ligaments with herbal oils. The oil here is selected after understanding the patient’s nature, disease condition if any, etc. The number of strokes and the strength of pressure vary according to the medical condition of the individual. Abhyanga massage works well in case of anxiety, fatigue, circulation disorder, arthritis and other injuries.




  • The rhythmic motion of the massage helps in relieving stiffness from joint and muscles and encourages free body movement.
  • This massage helps in managing the blood circulation, which helps in the removal of metabolic wastes and toxins from the body.



Pizhichil:- Pizhichil, when literary translated, means squeezing a cloth dipped in warm oil on the body of the patient. In pizhichil, the patient needs to adopt seven standard positions, such that no area of the body is left uncovered. This treatment is extremely beneficial for different rheumatic diseases, arthiritis , neuro disorders, etc.




  • Relieves body pain and muscle spasms;

Janu Vasti:- In this treatment, lukewarm herbal oils are poured around an artificial bridge around the affected area. Due to the healing properties of the herbal oil, it enriches the bloods and maintains strong muscles and connective tissue. 




  • It helps in loosening stiff muscles; 
  • It is effective for cervical spondilitis, neck pain, paralysis etc.



Pichu:- In Pichu, a thick layer of cotton is soaked with warm medicated oil and is applied over the affected area.  The oil being lukewarm is perfect for problems such as back pain, sports injuries, etc.




  • Extremely effective for degenerative problems;
  • Eases muscle pain and spasm;
  • Effectively promotes health and wellness



Alleviating Pain With Ayurvedic Herbal Medicine
