Infertility has become one of the major problems that the couples are facing these days. This problem has increased considerably in the last few years due to the changing lifestyle, stress and other factors. Ayurveda realising the problem of fertility developed a specialized form of treatment known as Aphrodisiac Therapy ( Vaajeekarana-Chikitsa). Ayurveda emphasise on the proper lifestyle, nutritious diet and herbal remedies for treating the infertility and improving the way of life. But, to understand the treatment, we have to know about the reasons of infertility in detail:

Reasons for infertility:

  • Excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs like cocaine, marijuana, steroids;
  • Lifestyle generated disorders like diabetes, obesity, etc. can lead to hormonal and metabolic changes reducing the fertility;
  • Emotional stress may create hormonal changes and metabolic changes reducing the fertility;
  • The electromagnetic radiation arising from electronic gadgets like laptops, X-rays, cell phones, etc.;
  • Smoking tobacco and consumption of other tobacco products;
  • Malnutrition or nutritional deficiency of vitamin A, folate, selenium , zinc, etc. may lead to the problems of infertility;
  • Environment exposure to indoor pollutants like pesticides and chemicals, and outdoor pollution due to factories, vehicles etc. can lead to infertility.

Besides, the reasons mentioned above, Ayurveda has a totally different understanding of the reasons of the infertility relating to the changes in diet, lifestyle and other patterns. This creates an imbalance of Doshas contributing to the problem of infertility. So, let us look at them in brief below:

  • Congenital abnormalities (Bija upa tapa): - It is related to the defect in the gamete leading to the structural and developmental anomalies of the reproductive system. Developmental disorders, chromosomal disorders are included in this.
  • Sperm Disease( Sukra Dosha): - The major causes of the seminal morbidity include food, behavioural and psychological factors.
    • The food factors include the excessive and habitual use of the dry, astringent, acidic, salty, bitter, and hot food.
    • The behavioural factors include hectic lifestyle, bad sleeping habits, extramarital sex, sexual abuse, sexual abstinence, suppressing natural urges, etc.
    • The Psychological factor includes anxiety, greed fear, anger, lack of love, etc.
  • Loss of libido ( Klaibya): - The causes for the loss of libido are old age, stress, exhaustion of sperm, debilitating diseases like T.B, diabetes, excessive indulgence in sex, etc. can lead to the quantitative and qualitative loss of sperm.

Ayurvedic Concept Of Treating Male Infertility:

The Ayurveda has specified many conducts (Charyas) to change the lifestyle and treat the infertility which are:

  • Routine of life ( Dinacharya)
  • Seasonal regimen ( Ritucharya)
  • Sleep ( Rathricharya)
  • Proper diet, sleep (Thrayopasthamba palana)
  • Ethical Regimen (Sadvritha)
  • Physical and mental conducts (Achara rasayana)
  • Yoga and meditation (Ashtanga Yoga)

Ayurvedic Treatment Process:

The process starts with the preliminary treatment (Purvakarma), Oleation(Snehana), Sudation(Swedana). After these two processes, the body is prepared for the further processes of main treatment ( Pradhanakarma). The main processes include purgation, oil enema, decoction enema, and enema through the urethal orifice. Vajikarana is the management done after the main treatment process with the help of the Vajikarana drugs.

Several herbs are traditionally used in Ayurvedic Therapies for Sukral and Vajikarana purposes:

  • Mucuna pruriens (Kapikachhu)- It is effective in increasing sperm motility and concentration;
  • Tribulus Terrestris Linn (Gokshura)- It effectively raises the testosterone levels;
  • Asparagus racemosus Willd (Shatavari)- It enhances fertility by reducing the oxidative stress;
  • Glycyrhiza glabra Linn. (Yashtimadhu)- It improves the semen quality;
  • Withania somnifera Dunal (Ashwagandha)- With a presumed testosterone effect, it enhances the spermatogenesis.
