Cellulitis is a common skin disorder caused due to a bacterial infection. It usually appears as a red, and swollen area of the skin that is tender to touch and feels warm. Cellulitis can be extremely painful and has a tendency to spread rapidly. Ayurveda provides an effective solution to the problem of how to cure cellulitis using herbs, herbal powder massage and panchakarma detox.
Though cellulitis can affect the skin of any part of the body, it usually affects the legs. In mild cases, it causes symptoms affecting only the surface of the skin. However, as the condition progresses, it may spread to the underlying tissues of the skin. If the infection is not controlled properly, it can spread to the lymph nodes and blood and cause life-threatening consequences due to the exudation of fluids and the resultant edema. The cure for swelling feet using natural herbs can prevent the spread of this disease and limit its symptoms.
Causes of Cellulitis
Cellulitis occurs due to the entry of bacteria into the skin through a cut, surgical incision, insect bite, or crack. It is commonly caused due to Staphylococcus and Streptococcus bacteria. Certain factors like a weak immune system, diabetes, and eczema can increase the risk of developing cellulitis.
The initial symptoms of cellulitis are as follows:
As the disease progresses, the patient may develop shaking, fever with chills, fatigue, lightheadedness, blistering, pain in the muscles, and excessive sweating. Ayurvedic remedies offer the best treatment for cellulitis on legs that can help to control these symptoms and prevent the disease from worsening.
The pain caused due to cellulitis is usually intense. Pain relief for cellulitis can be achieved by using natural herbs having analgesic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. The modern system of medicine treats this disease with the use of antibiotics that help to destroy the bacteria. Most of the antibiotics need to be taken for a duration of 10 to 21 days depending on the severity of the condition. It is important to continue taking these antibiotics for the recommended duration even after the symptoms have completely subsided to ensure complete recovery and prevent microbial resistance.
However, an inadvertent use of antibiotics in the past few decades and their irregular use have resulted in a lower efficacy of the antibiotics. Hence, these drugs may not be effective in destroying the organisms and clearing the infection completely. It may lead to the worsening of the symptoms such as pain, swelling, and blister formation. Hence, patients are advised to use natural remedies for water retention to ensure the bacteria are eliminated and hasten the recovery. Patients may also take an appropriate cellulitis treatment at home by ensuring proper rest is given to the affected part and it is protected from superadded infections.
The natural remedies for cellulitis given below can help in the management of this condition by producing a range of medicinal actions including an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antioxidant effect.
Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa): Punarnava acts as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent. It is also considered one of the best home remedies for swollen feet and ankles as it has the ability to eliminate excess fluids from the body through urination. It also reduces the discharge from the affected part and prevents blister formation.
Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris): Gokshura acts as a natural analgesic agent and reduces pain caused due to cellulitis. It also helps in destroying bacteria responsible for the infection by producing a powerful antibacterial action. It is considered one of the best natural diuretics for edema treatment and hence, is recommended for the patients who have developed swelling in the feet due to cellulitis.
The same research (mentioned above) highlights the uses of gokshura that acts as a natural analgesic agent and reduces pain caused due to cellulitis. It also helps in destroying bacteria responsible for the infection by producing a powerful antibacterial action.
Varun (Crataeva religiosa): Varun is particularly beneficial in the cases when there is an excessive blister formation or an abscess. The anti-diuretic action of this herb helps to get rid of edema and swelling in the feet. It increases the secretion of urine in the kidneys and thus, helps to get rid of the excess fluids accumulated due to cellulitis.
Shilajit (mineral pitch): Shilajit is revered for its rejuvenative properties. It helps in the faster repair of the affected skin tissues by stimulating the regeneration of the cells. It also acts as a mild diuretic agent and provides natural treatment for edema legs. It also helps to clear the infection by producing an antibacterial action. Regular use of this herb is recommended to prevent the recurrent attacks of cellulitis.
Triphala: Triphala provides relief from pain, redness and swelling caused due to cellulitis. It is a combination of three herbs, which are known as the natural fluid retention remedies. Triphala can help to reduce edema in the affected tissues and feet by preventing retention of excess water.
In a research paper presented by Dr Santosh Kumar Shaw et al mentions the uses of triphala. In a case study a 19 years old female patient was diagnosed with preseptal cellulitis on clinical presentation and was advised bidalaka with triphala powder and yastimadhu powder for five days. The signs and symptoms got completely subsided. The results proved to be significant on the basis of clinical assessment.
In another research presented by Dr Faizan Javed et al on the herbal treatments available in Ayurveda for cellulitis also mentions the uses of triphala. According to this research paper Triphala provides relief from pain, redness and swelling caused due to cellulitis. It is a combination of three herbs viz. Amalaki, Haritaki and Bibhitaki, which are known as the natural fluid retention remedies. Triphala can help to reduce edema in the affected tissues and feet by preventing retention of excess water.
Ayurveda recommends the use of herbs for the natural cure for cellulitis. According to the ayurvedic concept of Tridosha, this disease occurs as a result of the vitiation of all the three doshas, with pitta dosha being the dominant one. Hence, the edema natural cures are directed towards maintaining the balance in the doshas. The treatment involves the use of herbs, which have the ability to destroy the bacteria and protect the tissues against further damage. The natural remedies for swollen feet also help to control the symptoms of this disease by preventing an excessive exudation of the discharge from the affected part of the skin.
Patients are advised to follow the concept of Ayurvedic medicine for cellulitis to get rid of the symptoms in an effective and harmless manner. The herbal remedies are safe and do not cause any severe side effects.
