Constipation, which is also referred to dyschezia and even costiveness, is the disease wherein people experience difficulty in bowel movements. The patients will find it very hard to pass their bowels.
There are varying levels of constipation. Sometimes, it may be less frequent and on various occasions, it can be accompanied with a lot of pain as well. The stool tends to become very hard and thus it becomes difficult to pass down the anal tract.
Causes Of Constipation
There are different reasons that lead to constipation and they can be categorized as congenital and even primary and secondary as well. Some of the common causes that often lead to constipation are as follows.
Symptoms Of Constipation
If you are looking to spot the main signs of constipation, here are some possible symptoms.
In Ayurvedic terms, constipation is referred to as “malabhaddata”. It occurs when the vata dosha of our body fails to work properly. As per the principles of ayurveda, vata dosha is present near the large intestine and its main function is to regulate the bowel movements. When the vata dosha doesn’t functions properly, it can lead to excessive dryness of stools and this in turn leads to impaired bowel movement which causes constipation.

There are different herbs which can help in treating constipation. Here are some of them.
It is essentially a brown powder which comprises of three plants namely amla, baheda and harad. Harad works as a natural laxative and even as an astringent that helps in efficient working of stomach. It loosens the hard stools and also comes with anti bacterial and anti fugal properties too. Amla is a mild laxative and it can help cool down the lining of stomach and even cut down inflammation issues as well. To get relief from constipation, all you need to do is take 2 teaspoons of triphala along with a glass full of lukewarm water. Make sure not to eat anything after this solution.
A research paper published by AKS Rawat et al mentions the effectiveness of triphala churna in the treatment of constipation. It is a powder made by grinding three kinds of fruits or herbs. 3 to 6 grams of this powder or 2- 3 tablets taken at the time of going to bed with warm water or milk helps in having a clean bowel motion the next morning.
Haritki (Terminalia chebula):
Haritki known with a botanical name of Terminalia chebula, it is grown all across India. It primarily consists of chebulagic, corilagin and chebulinic acid. The fruits of this herb have a laxative property and are mainly used for the sake of balancing the digestive system. It has the power to increase the frequency with which stools are removed from the body and can evacuate your bowels completely. It also removes parasites and aids in better functioning of the colon.
In a report published by WHO on ‘Traditional Herbal Medicines for Primary Health Care’ mentions about the benefits of haritaki in the treatment of constipation. Haritaki has laxative, carminative, digestive, antispasmodic, anthelmintic, anti-microbial, anti-stress and endurance promoting properties. To achieve laxative action of Haritaki, adult dose of powder is 3 to 6 grams and for children, the dose of Haritaki is 500 mg to 1 gram, to be taken with lukewarm water once a day on an empty stomach. It is preferably taken early in the morning or minimum three hours after dinner. Haritaki is very useful in constipation and associated gastrointestinal disorders.
Isabgol made of 70 percent soluble fibre, it acts as an efficient laxative which is used to treat a lot of different digestive problems. It mainly increases the amount of bulk that is present in your stools. It also increases the amount of water which is present in your stools. The actual dosage is going to vary from person to person and also depends upon the extent of constipation problem. However, ideally 2 teaspoon of isabgol with 8 oz of fluid seems to be apt for your use.
A study by Vipin Kumar on the uses of isabgol husk throws light on its laxative properties besides many others. Psyllium Husk significantly increases stool moisture, as well as wet and dry stool weight. When taken with a sufficient amount of liquid (at least 30 ml per 1-gm of husk), it produces an increased volume of intestinal contents due to its highly bulking properties and hence a stretch stimulus occurs which triggers defecation. At the same time the swollen mass of mucilage forms a lubricating layer which makes the transit of intestinal contents easier.
