Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Natural Treatment

Diabetic neuropathy is an aggravation of diabetes mellitus. The nerves in the body are damaged due to prolonged exposure to high blood sugar resulting from diabetes. This disorder occurs due to micro vascular injury to small blood vessels supplying blood to the nerve endings.

The nerves become slow and are unable to carry messages to and from the brain efficiently. It has been found out that more than half of the people suffering from diabetes slowly progress to diabetic neuropathy.

The symptoms however develop slowly over a long period of time and vary according to the nerves that are affected. There are four types of neuropathy depending upon the type of nerves that are affected. The most common being the peripheral neuropathy in which the legs get affected first, followed by hands and arms, it results in loss of sensation in the legs and feet.

The loss of sensation is not immediate but slowly starts with numbness, pain or a tingling sensation in the feet or the lower legs. The loss of sensation in feet makes them vulnerable to foot injuries. Therefore, it’s very important for the patients whose blood sugar levels are not under control to examine their feet very minutely for any cuts or injuries.

Symptoms of Peripheral Peuropathy

This is the most common form of diabetic neuropathy and the symptoms tend to get worse at night. Following are the main symptoms:

  • Tingling or burning sensation and sharp pains or cramps in the legs
  • Increased sensitivity to touch and muscle weakness
  • Numbness and reduced ability to feel pain and temperature changes
  • Loss of reflexes especially in the ankle
  • Severe foot problems like infections, ulcers, deformities
  • Reduced balance and coordination

Ayurvedic Treatment For Diabetic Neuropathy

Ayurveda, the ancient healing science from India is well-equipped to treat this disorder. According to Ayurveda the three doshas- Vata, Pita and Kapha should be in perfect balance for a disease free state. An imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas results in diabetic neuropathy.

The natural treatment for diabetic neuropathy revolves around restoring the dosha balance, managing the symptoms and preventing them from getting worse by keeping the blood sugar levels under check. Besides this, massage with herbal oils and topical herbal medicines are also administered to treat this disorder.

All these methodologies help treat the illness and promote wellness. Ayurvedic practitioners also expect the patients to participate actively in their treatment as the treatment requires many lifestyle and dietary changes.

Natural Herbal Remedies For Diabetic Neuropathy

Ayurveda is an ancient and time tested healing science that is effective in treating various symptoms of diabetic neuropathy through the use of various herbs. The herbs used for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy are:

Haridra (Turmeric) - It’s a almost considered as a wonder herb that find its uses in the Ayurveda treatment of many diseases. Turmeric destroys the contaminated Kapha and as a result the further progression of the disease stops. Its anti-inflammatory properties also help in reducing the neuropathic pain naturally. It helps to detoxify the cells naturally, removes the blocks and cleanses the system too.

A research paper presented by Bidhan Mahajon mentions about the traditional herbal remedies useful in the treatment of complications arising from diabetes. Haridra (turmeric) is one such herb that finds wide usage across Ayurveda for various treatments. 20 ml of amla juice taken if taken with haridra powder and honey daily can provide relief from diabetic neuropathy, retinopathy and cardiovascular complications.

Guduchi (Giloy) – It’s a very useful herb in reducing blood sugar levels. The patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy can use guduchi oil to massage their hands and feet in the morning and evening. It also boosts immunity.

Dr Sadhna Prithviraj Chavan et al, in a research on the effectiveness of guduchi in the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy mentions about its anti-diabetic, analgesic, antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities. The effect of guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) on diabetic peripheral neuropathy is scientifically validated in various animal models.

The anti-diabetic activities of Tinospora Cordifolia are attributed because of alkaloids (Magnoflorine, Palmetine, Jatrorrhizine), tannins, cardiac glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, etc. It acts as anti-diabetic drug through explanatory oxidative stress, promoting insulin secretion by inhibiting gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis.

Fenugreek- It helps to slow down the digestion of carbohydrates and thus helps to reduce the blood sugar.

Triphala- It imay be a beneficial drug for diabetes. It also aids internal cleansing of the body.

Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia)- Diabetic foot is a complication of diabetes which results in the development of non-healing foot ulcers which if not treated properly can result in amputation. Manjistha may be useful in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers.

Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata)- It may be a useful herb for peripheral neuropathy in which nerve damage occurs due to prolonged exposure of the nerves to sugar. It helps in providing relief from diabetic nerve pain.

The above mentioned herbs may be effective to relief symptoms of neuropathy in feet. However they must be used only after consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner and medical doctor.

Natural Treatment For Peripheral Neuropathy

Besides the above mentioned herbs the following natural remedies for peripheral neuropathy are worth considering:

  • Evening primrose and flaxseed- They contain high quantities of essential fatty acids that aid in creating myelin sheath around the nerves.

  • Cayenne peppers- They contain capsaicin that helps in neuropathic pain relief.

  • Garlic- It has sulphur properties that help in increasing the insulin sensitivity of the cells.

  • I saw Dr Saini in July 2019 for “acid reflux” after suffering of months. I tried different medicines but didn’t work. There was a time I started believing that there was no permanent cure to this disease. Dr Saini is an authentic Ayurvedic doctor. He can do miracles for you. I honestly believe he’s a blessing for the city of Melbourne otherwise it would have been very hard to physically see an Ayurvedic doctor like him. My heart burn got worst with the time & became just unbearable. I couldn’t eat anything or sleep at all. Finally, I found him via google and peoples reviews convinced me to give him a call. He’s an angel & listens everything. He gave me a three month’s plan which I completed happily. But unbelievably my acid reflux reduced 80% within three days & completely gone in five days & it never came back since then. I’m so happy & enjoying my life like I used to. God bless Dr Saini & God bless those who wrote reviews which convinced me to give him a call first time.

  • After struggling for years with energy levels, food intolerances and sleep issues with our daughter, we tried Dr Saini. The results for her have been outstanding. Her food intolerances (she was on a strict FODMAP diet) have all but disappeared. Her sleep is consistent and better. Her ability to regulate herself across an entire day (without falling into a heap) has improved her life quality 100 fold. His approach is thoughtful and considered. We always feel like he listens to all aspects of her health and adapts his methods to what she needs next. I would highly recommend working with Dr Saini to anyone considering it.

  • Dr Saini has been so supportive in working with me to refine my mind, body and spirit to once again be able to consume gluten. Once I was diagnosed as gluten-intolerant, I thought I would never eat gluten again. But by embracing the ways of Ayurveda, I am now eating gluten on a daily basis that is pain free and discomfort free. Joseph Ferguson

  • Thank you Dr Saini for the remarkable improvement in my health since first seeing you only 3 months ago. With herbal supplements, herbal teas and a single panchakarma treatment I have already experienced the following benefits that western medicine had not been able to assist: * Lower blood pressure permitting a reduction in medication. * Reduced anxiety. * No dizziness or fainting following sudden exercise such as climbing stairs. * Eye floaters gone. * Persistent (2 year) cough almost gone. * Frequent reflux gone. With continued treatment and lifestyle changes I am looking forward to: * normal blood pressure without medication, * weight loss without strict diets, * cough gone!

  • I cannot recommend highly enough. This has been my first experience with Ayurvedic medicine and the Panchakarma cleanse and I can finally say that after years of striving for better health and wellbeing, I finally understand what is going to work for me moving forward. Having experience a traumatic event and subsequent PTSD 5 years ago, my gut and my body became increasingly compromised. In this time I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome and various ailments of the gut. I came to see Dr Saini and Pooja at a time that I felt frustrated with my years of work to see some more obvious progress with my healing. Having completed the Panchakarma cleanse, I am feeling fully renewed. Awake. Settled. I no longer struggle to wake each morning and get through each day. My appetite feels steady and all cravings have completely ceased. I now have some tools under my belt to fall back on when I know my digestive system needs a break. This cleanse has been a complete game changer. Thankyou Dr Saini and Pooja for you incredible guidance and support. Liz
