Herbal medicines are an effective and safe alternative to the modern medicines. In most of the developing countries, the herbal medicines are a way to meet the health care needs of the people who do not have access to the modern medicines.



The herbal medicines are the result of the therapeutic experiences of several indigenous species. The demand for the herbal medicines is increasing due to their low cost, effectiveness and less side effects.



These medicines have been proved very effective in treating age-related disorders like osteoporosis, memory loss, immune disorders, etc. for which no modern medicine is until now available. This has increased the demand for herbal medicines and expanded the market for the herbal products. 



Facts About Herbs 


  • Our ancestors from a long time have used herbs in different forms. They not only used the herbs in food preparation but also in different remedies. Herbs were the most common ingredients for medicinal preparations used for treating various diseases. 
  • The Egyptians used the herbs for different medicinal and religious purposes dating as far as 3500 B.C. On the other hand, the Chinese began to explore the benefits of the herbs in 2500 B.C. Many scripts suggest the use of the herbs in Chinese medicines. 
  • The discovery of America itself resulted from western civilisation quest for the new routes to gain access to herbs and spices. In order to find new trade routes, Columbus discovered America and the age of exploration unveiled the new world. 
  • The western medicine moved away from herbalism relying on the chemicals to cure diseases. The medicines contained several chemicals developed over the years but the fact is that these medicines were based on the active ingredients present in the plants and herbs. 
  • The use of herbs has not been limited only to preparing medicines but has extended to preparing food. There are numerous herbs such as the Basil, Thyme, Rosemary, Oregano, Cilantro, etc. that are popularly used in the preparation of different cuisines. They add to the taste and nutritional value of the food. 
  • The herbs or herbal products can be more than just spices or medicines as they have many more uses. Various massages and relaxing therapies such as aromatherapy largely depend upon the use of herbs.
