Kutajarishta -Herbal Preparation for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Ulcerative colitis

Kutajarishtam

 

 

Kutajarishta is an ayurvedic herbal formulation prepared from process of fermentation. It is useful in diarrhoea, chronic dysentery, abdominal pain, and anorexia, Painful spasm of the anal sphincter, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome.

 

 

Ingredients of Kutajarishta

 

 

Holarrhena antidysenterica is the main ingredient, as the name syas, it gives anti-dysentery and anti-diarrhoeal properties to Kutajarishtam. Other ingredients are Woodfordia fruticosa, Madhuca indica, Gmelina arborea and Vitis vinifera etc.

 

 

Pharmacological action of Kutajarishta

 

 

Kutajarishta pacifies kapha and pitta humour as per Ayurveda. It reduces inflammation of intestinal mucosa and acts anti-diarrheal and anti-dysentery agent. It also helps to stop bleeding in ulcerative colitis and reduce frequency of motion.

 

 

Moreover, it has antibacterial and anti-microbial properties by it does not only helpful in stopping excessive motions but also beneficial to fight infections.

 

 

It is anti-spasmodic and mainly works on anal sphincter. It aids relaxation of anal sphincter. Therefore, it is useful in painful spasm of the anal sphincter or tenesmus.

 

 

Uses and indications of Kutajarishta

 

  1. Diarrhoea
  2. Amoebic and bacillary dysentery
  3. Irritable bowel syndrome  (IBS)
  4. Sprue/Celiac disease
  5. Fever due to abdominal infection
  6. Bleeding disorders of intestine
  7. Bleeding per rectum
  8. Tenesmus - painful spasm of the anal sphincter
  9.  Bleeding Piles
  10. Anorexia

 

 

 

Side effects of Kutajarishta

 

There is no side effects mentioned in ayurvedic texts or reported by clients as such from prescribed therapeutic dosage of this preparation. However, it is contraindicated in constipation because of antisecretory effect. Excess use of Kutajarishtam may lead to constipation so take only recommended dose. 

It is advisable that ayurvedic medicine and treatment are generally considered to be safe when taken under the supervision and guidance of an Ayurvedic Doctor, but rarely may be associated with possible adverse reactions in individual cases.
