Macular Degeneration is a eye condition caused due to the deterioration or degeneration of the central part of the retina. It is one of the leading causes of loss of vision. It affects the posterior part of the eye, called the retina. The retina is supplied with the optic nerve carrying the signals related to the image on the retina from the eyes to the brain.
The central portion of the retina, called the macula, is responsible for the central vision in the eyes. It controls the ability of a person to drive a car, recognize colors and faces, read, and see the fine details of an object. The treatment of eye diseases likes macular degeneration, optic atrophy and cataracts with ayurvedic natural remedies can help with the symptoms. [1]
Causes and Types of Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration occurs when there is damage to the macula, which reduces the ability of the person to have a clear vision. The progressive vision loss caused due to this condition can become worse over a period of time resulting in blindness. Seeking alternative retinal degeneration treatment based on the concepts of Ayurveda can help people to prevent the progress of this disease. [2]
Macular Degeneration is classified into two types: the dry macular degeneration and wet macular degeneration. More than 80% of the cases of Macular Degeneration are of the dry or atrophic type. The wet or exudative type of Macular Degeneration forms just 10 to 15% of the total cases diagnosed with this disease. Different researches over the periods of time are suggestive that Ayurveda can offer a management for macular degeneration dry and wet symptoms.
The risk of this condition is higher in the older individuals. The progress of age-related Macular Degeneration is characterized by three stages, which are as follows:
Early Age-related Macular Degeneration: at this stage, the patients do not experience vision loss. This stage is largely asymptomatic. That is why; it is important to undergo regular eye checkups so that the disease can be detected while it’s at the early stage and appropriate treatment can be started to minimize the risk of blindness. Following an ayurvedic diet at this stage can be highly beneficial to prevent the disease from worsening.
Intermediate Age-related Macular Degeneration: At this stage, the patients may experience a mild vision loss, without any noticeable symptoms.
Late Age-related Macular Degeneration: the vision loss becomes significant, at this stage, and begins to hinder the daily activities of the patients.
