Mahamasha oil is ayurvedic oil used for neurological and muscular diseases. It can be used externally in massaging affected body parts as well as orally for curing neurological ailments. It is beneficial in hemiplegia, paralysis, joint stiffness, deafness, tinnitus, locked jaw, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
मावस्या ढकं दत्त्वा तुलाऽर्द्ध दशमूलतः । पलानिच्छागमांसस्य त्रिंशद् द्रोणेऽम्भसः पचेत् ।
पूतशीते कषाये च चतुर्थांशावशेषिते । प्रस्थञ्च तिलतैलस्य पयो दत्त्वा चतुर्गुणम् ।
आत्मगुप्तोरुबूकश्च शताह्वा लवणत्रयम् । जीवनीयानि मञ्जिष्ठा चव्यचित्रककट्फलम् ।
सव्योषं पिप्पलीमूलं रास्नामधुकसैन्धवम् । देवदार्वमताकुष्ठं वाजिगन्धा वचा शटी ।
एतैरक्षसमैर्भागैः साधयेऽन्मृदुनाऽग्निना । पक्षाघातेऽर्दिते वाते बाधिर्ये हनुसंग्रहे ।
कर्णनादे शिरःशूले तिमिरे च त्रिदोषजे । पाणिपादशिरोग्रीवाभ्रमणे मन्दचक्रमे ।
कलायखळे पाङ्गुल्ये गृध्रस्यामवबाहुके । पाने बस्तौ तथाऽभ्यङ्गे नस्यकर्णाक्षिपूरणे ।
तैलमेतत्प्रशंसन्ति सर्ववातरुजापहम् ।। ५७७।।

Main Ingredients of Mahamasha Tailam Oil
Black gram (Phasleolus Mungo) is a main ingredient of mahamasha oil. Other ingredients are Aegle marmelos, Premna mucronata, Oroxylum indicum, Gmelina arborea, – Stereospermum suaveolens, Desmodium gangeticum, Urarica picta, Tribulus terrestris, Solanum indicum, Solanum xanthocarpum etc.
Ayurvedic Pharmacological action of Mahamasha Oil
Virya: Usna
Guna: Vata shaman, guru, Balya, pushti vardhan
Mahamasha oil pacifies vata humor. It possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Therefore, it is beneficial in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis when applied externally over the affected parts.
It has great impact over nerves and widely used in diseases of nervous system. It is used in neurological ailments internally as well as external in massage. Massage of this oil strengthens the muscles and improves blood circulation to the affected area. By which affected parts of body get proper nutrition.
It aids in improvement of functions of affected parts. In internal uses, it also works by providing strength to the body parts. Moreover, its internal use increases production of synovial fluids and beneficial in osteoarthritis.
It is also used to treat tinnitus. 2 to 4 drops are instilled in ears and also taken orally with milk. As per Ayurveda, tinnitus is due to vitiated vata humor. It pacifies the vata and treats the tinnitus.
Use and indications of Mahamasha Tailam oil as per above Shloka:
Pakshagaht: hemiplegia, storke
Badhirya: Deafness or hearing issues
Hanustambh: Locked jaw
Karnashool, naad: Ear disorders like pain in ear and tinnitus
Manyashool: Cervical diorders
Shirah shool: headache, migraine
Tridoshaj timir: Loss of vision
Hasta pada Shira grava kamp: Tremors local or generalised
Mandchakram: Weakness whilst walking
Kalaya khanjya and pangula: weakness in limbs similar to muscular dystrophy
Gridhrasi: Sciatica
Avabahuka: Frozen shoulder
All vata rogas
This oil can be drank with milk, used as basti, abhaynaga, nasya, karna purna and akshi purna.

Side effects and precautions of Mahamasha oil
There is no side effects mentioned in Ayurvedic texts or reported by clients as such from prescribed therapeutic dosage of this preparation. It is advisable that Ayurvedic medicine and treatment are generally considered to be safe when taken under the supervision and guidance of an Ayurvedic Doctor, but rarely may be associated with possible adverse reactions in individual cases.
