Natural Ayurvedic Cure For Anemia- Sickle cell, Pernicious, Aplastic, Myelodysplastic, Autoimmune, Iron deficiency

Anemia is a condition caused due to the lower red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels. For men, anemia is defined as the hemoglobin levels less than 13 grams per 100 ml, whereas, in women, it is defined as the hemoglobin levels less than 12 grams per 100 ml. Patients diagnosed with this condition can get a natural treatment for anemia using alternative ayurvedic herbs.[1]

The causes of anemia include a decreased production of red blood cells (RBCs) and hemoglobin. It may also occur due to the loss of RBCs and hemoglobin as a result of excessive or ongoing bleeding disorder.

Patients with mild anemia do not suffer from any noticeable symptoms. In severe cases, it may cause unusual tiredness, pallor of the skin and nails, fatigue, shortness of breath, and palpitations. Iron deficiency treatment in Ayurveda includes the use of herbs that can restore the normal hemoglobin levels by stimulating the RBC production. These herbs may possess natural abilities to arrest abnormal blood loss thus preventing bleeding and chronic anemia conditions. [2]

Hemoglobin plays an important role in the transport of oxygen to different cells and tissues of the body. It combines with oxygen and forms oxyhemoglobin. Oxygen is released by hemoglobin in the cells as the blood circulates through different organs. Hence, normal hemoglobin level is essential to ensure proper supply of oxygen to all the organs.  However, this function is hampered when the patients develop anemia.

Iron deficiency is a common cause of anemia as iron is a major component needed for the production of hemoglobin. Chronic blood loss or a deficiency of this mineral in a regular diet can reduce the iron levels in the blood and increase the risk of anemia. Hence, patients suffering from this illness are advised to increase their intake of natural iron by including foods rich in this mineral in their diet.

If anemia is not managed properly, the low hemoglobin levels can reduce the supply of oxygen to the vital tissues such as the heart and the brain. This can result in unpleasant symptoms such as chest pain, confusion, decline in cognitive functions and a reduced ability to focus.

Patients suffering from these symptoms can also use the natural iron supplements to restore healthy hemoglobin levels and prevent the complications caused due to the low oxygen supply.

The reduced oxygen supply to the skin and hair leads to additional symptoms including hair loss, and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines at an earlier age. Iron deficiency management based on the concepts of Ayurveda is aimed at enhancing the general health of the patients and restoring the natural health and glow of the skin through the gut health. [3]

Ayurveda also recommends a holistic treatment that can involves the natural ways to increase iron intake through gut absorption by using herbs and making appropriate changes in the diet. This can provide some long-term results for preventing anemia and iron deficiency.

The risk of anemia is higher in women due to the loss of blood through normal menstruation. Recurring internal bleeding from the colon or stomach due to disorders such as colon cancer or peptic ulcers are also the common causes of anemia.

Proper Ayurvedic treatment can help in healing anemia naturally by managing the main cause of the condition. Ayurvedic practitioner (with ayurveda doctors qualification from India) at the Melbourne natural medicine clinic, “Pure Herbal Ayurved Clinic” can offer detail consultation in relation to find out the main reasons for poor absorption of nutients from the gut etc.

Aplastic anemia is a other form of anemia which is caused due to the bone marrow failure. It results in an inadequate production of the red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets by the bone marrow. Patients who suffer from aplastic anemias can also seek the natural treatment for anemia based on the concepts of Ayurveda, which could improve the bone marrow functions and prevent the complications caused due to the low production of RBCs, WBCs, and platelets. [4]

Natural Iron Supplements For Anemia

Natural iron supplements for anemia such as herbs having high iron content can help to manage this condition. A regular use of herbs for anemia is also recommended for the women who suffer from polymenorrhea and menorrhagia that result in an excessive blood loss during menstruation.

Aplastic anemia treatment recommended by Ayurveda is aimed at improving the bone marrow functions. Finding the natural remedies for anemia that can manage the root cause forms the basis of the Ayurvedic treatments. It may help the patients to avoid the symptoms and complications of this disorder.

Ayurvedic Herbs For Iron Deficiency

Patients can use the Indian herbs for iron deficiency given below to improve their hemoglobin and RBC levels and can obtain relief from the symptoms of anemia.

Amala (Phyllanthus emblica): Amala ican be an effective herbal ayurvedic medicine for anemia caused due to the destruction of RBCs due to toxins, pollutants, and oxidative damage. [5]

According to experiments conducted by Padma Venkatasubramanian et al, amla juice contained 0.35% ascorbic acid (AA), 0.33% tannins (gallic acid equivalent), 0.13% gallic acid, 0.58% total organic acid and 0.002% iron on a w/w basis. It was also found that amla juice can increase the dialysable iron three times more than FeSO4 alone (control) in the cell-free digestion model.

In a paper presented by Srivasuki K.P. on ‘Nutritional and Health Care Benefits of Amla’, he emphasised the extraordinary medicinal qualities of Amla. It can promotes iron absorption and therefore may be helpful in treating anaemia.

Haritaki (Terminalia chebula): Pernicious anemia treatment using Haritaki can berecommended for the patients who suffer from peptic ulcers that cause continuous bleeding from the lesions.

An important research was conducted by Vidhi Kumath and Mahesh Dadhich on 45 patients suffering from anaemia. The patients were divided into three groups of 15 patients each. Group A was administered Haritaki (Terminalia Chebula), group B was administered Haritaki with jaggery and group C was given placebo for a month.

The results were very impressive and showed an increase of 17.96% in haemoglobin in group A whereas group B recorded an increase of 14.71% and group C showed an increase of 1.22%. Therefore the results showed that Haritaki and jaggery both were potent in alleviating anaemia.

Kumari (Aloe vera): Ayurvedic herbs such as Kumari can help to arrest abnormal bleeding thus can be helpful in managing the common cause of anemia.

Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia): Guduchi can offers natural treatment for sickle cell anemia as it can support a adequate amount of iron to the body and improving hemoglobin levels. [9]
