As per Ayurveda, healthy skin is a sign of a healthy body. Inversely any skin related disorder means that something is wrong with the body. A variety of herbs have been mentioned in the Ayurvedic texts that help in detoxifying the body and help in correcting the vitiated doshas.
In recent years, the Ayurvedic herbs have gained wide popularity for treatment of skin disorders. While the herbs used in treatment of skin disorders though may be slow acting, provide a longer lasting ayurvedic skin care solution.
In Australia, people suffer from all sort sof skin conditions, but three kinds of skin disorders have been found to be more prevalent - Psoriasis, eczema and urticaria.
In psoriasis, the skin cells grow too quickly i.e. before the previous layer is shed & therefore, scales or patches appear on the body.
Eczema is a chronic skin disease where the skin turns red, patchy and itchy. Though it is mostly seen in kids, it may continue into adulthood.
Urticaria develops due to allergic reactions to some elements in the environment. It is characterized by red raised bumps on any part of the body which is typically itchy.
As per ayurvedic traditions, wrong diet and an undisciplined lifestyle are two of the most common causes that trigger skin orders. If a person follows a diet plan that is in conflict with the season or his ayurvedic constitution then there is disruption in the balance of doshas in the body, which triggers the skin problems. Pitta dosha imbalance is considered to be prime element responsible for skin disorders.
A typical plan for ayurvedic skin care may include an ayurvedic consultation to understand the underlying cause of the condition. Post assessment, the ayurvedic practitioner will formulate a plan of diet and lifestyle modification including yoga if required. He or she may also suggest some herbal formulation used traditionally to treat skin conditions. In some skin conditions Ayurveda suggests the body cleanse with Panchkarma detox method.
