Panchakarma - The Highly Effective Ayurvedic Detoxification Therapy

Literally meaning “five actions”, Panchakarma is the process of removing unwanted toxins from the body. According to Ayurveda, our body is crisscrossed by channels or tube like structures which aid a number of physiological processes such as breathing, blood circulation, supply of nutrients, and filtration of toxins.

The accumulation of these toxins in the body leads to the occurrence of diseases which further clog our microscopic and macroscopic channels. Panchakarma therapy is used to remove these toxic clogs from the body in order to normalize the physiological process.

Panchakarma therapy is a detoxification therapy that helps to get rid of all the negative effects of stress on the body and mind. This therapy aims to eliminate toxins from the body along with restoring balance of the body. Panchakarma works to enhance the strength, energy and mental clarity of an individual. Along with strengthening the immune system, Panchakarma brings about deep relaxation and sense of well being in an individual. Panchakarma includes a set of five actions:

  • Vamana: It is mainly used to eliminate toxins through therapeutic vomiting. Also known as medical emesis, Vamana is widely used in treating Kaphaj disorders. It is also used as a treatment for disorders related to depression. According to some studies, Vamana is considered very effective for treating disorders related to different systems of the human body.
  • Virechana: One of the Panchakarma therapies, Virechana is also known as medical purgation. It is mainly used to treat bronchial asthma, psoriasis and diabetes. It is considered the best treatment to manage skin disorders.
  • Nasya: It is a Panchakarma treatment for body cleansing. It is mainly used for clearing nasal passages. It is a feminine given name of Hebrew origin. Pradhamana nasya is widely recommended by ayurvedic physicians and has been found useful to treat chronic sinusitis. A number of clinical trials of nasya have been carried out for myopia.
  • Rakta Moksha: It is a traditional ayurvedic method used for the purification and cleansing of blood. With a number of toxins present in the gastro-intestinal tract, blood absorbs these toxins and circulates them throughout the body. This is called toxemia which is the root cause of infections and hypertensions. In such cases, elimination of toxins and purification of blood is required which is done through Rakta Moksha.
  • Basti: It is used to treat vata disorders. It is a treatment which is done with medical substances like herbal oils, and decoctions into the rectum of the person. It is mainly advised in the case of burn out, loss of appetite, calorie diet and overwork.

During the Panchakarma treatment, one has to follow certain rules; such as:

  • One has to use only warm water for drinking, bathing and other activities.
  • One cannot sleep during daytime.
  • One has to avoid exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
  • It is not advisable to stay awake at night.
  • One cannot consume foods which cause indigestion.
  • One has to completely avoid exercise and mental stress.

There are various benefits of Panchakarma Therapy; for instance:

  • Removal of toxins from the body
  • Balancing of the Doshas
  • Reduced stress and complete relaxation
  • Increased glow and softness of skin
