Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a most common hormonal disease in women. It affects 5 to 10% of women during their reproductive age.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome, also known as Stein-Leventhal syndrome or hyperandrogenic anovulation is a disorder that is commonly caused due to imbalances in the functioning of the endocrine system. The causes of PCOS are not completely understood.
The ovaries of women with PCOS are enlarged and filled with small aggregations of fluid called follicles. These can be detected during an ultrasound examination. If PCOS is diagnosed and treated early, it will help avoiding long-term complications, such as infertility, heart disease or type II diabetes in females.
Causes of Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
The exact causes of PCOS are not known. However, certain factors are considered to predispose a person toward PCOS.
According to Ayurveda, PCOS is mainly a Kapha disease. It is caused by aggravated KAPHA and VATA. The causes of PCOS may be genetic alone with unwisely choosing diet and lifestyle that may aggravate the kapha humor in the body.
The ovaries become filled with sacs of fluid called follicles and become enlarged.

Ayurvedic Therapies and Panchkarma Detox for PCOS
The following therapies may be used in Ayurveda to help treat PCOD:
Basti (Herbal Enema)
This refers to enema of medicated oil or an herbal decoction through the rectum. Basti helps release vitiated vata, which is responsible for health problems such as PCOS. Apana Vayu, a type of Vata dosha, controls the ovum in females. Basti helps regulate apana vayu.
Virechan (Herbal Purgation)
This procedure helps to eliminate toxins in the body such as vitiated pitta. Drugs that activate bowel movements are passed for removal of doshas through the rectum.
Vaman (Herbal Vomiting)
This procedure induces vomiting using drugs. It helps to cleanse the body and remove vitiated kapha. It helps balance the hormones.
For people suffering from PCOS, performing yoga exercises will help them relax. The specific postures that may provide relief are Butterfly pose, Reclining butterfly pose or Suptabadhokonasana, Bharadvaja’s Twist or Bharadvajasana, Moving the Grinding Wheel pose or Chakki Chalanasana, Corpse pose or Shavasana, Padma Sadhana, and Sun Salutation or Surya Namaskar.
