The prostate is a walnut sized gland present between rectum and pubic bone in men. It plays a role in the process of seminal fluid production. It surrounds the urinary duct (urethra) at the urinary bladder opening.

Prostate enlargement is a common problem in men genrally over and around age 60. Prostate enlargement also called benign prostate hyperplasia is a condition in which prostate gland enlarges in size and causes difficulties in urination. In many cases, a surgical intervention may be required.

Ayurvedic Views on BPH

Although, exact underlying causes of the prostate enlargement are not known, but enlargement is caused by vitiated Vata humor in the urinary system. Vata aggravation generally may occur by controlling the urge of urination and over indulgence in sex.

Symptoms of Prostate Hypertrophy

The following symptoms may appear in men with prostate hypertrophy:

  • Frequent urination at night
  • Feeling a trouble starting or stopping urination
  • Dribbling of urine
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Feeling of incomplete emptying of bladder
  • Lower abdominal pain (in some cases)
  • Slow or weak urinary stream

Basti karma:

Basti karma is one of the main panchakarma procedures. It is used to eliminate vata humor from the body. It is also called herbal enema. These herbal enemas are of many kinds, but when it is used in prostate enlargement, herbal oil is used as medicine in the enema. It pacifies the vata humor and may gradually help in reducing the increased size of prostate gland.

Yoga to Manage Prostate Enlargement

Yoga may help men in symptomatic relief of prostate enlargement and also help strength the urinary system.
