Uveitis Alternative Natural Ayurveda Treatment and Management

Author : Gurnam Saini

Uveitis is an inflammatory disorder affecting the eyes. It usually occurs due to the inflammation and swelling of the uvea, a middle layer of the eyes. Uveitis can be infectious as well as non-infectious in nature. Ayurveda  may offers uveitis alternative herbal management and treatment options.[1]

 Symptoms of Uveitis

Uveitis can occur in one or both the eyes. The common symptoms of this disorder may include pain and severe redness in the affected eyes, dark spots floating in the vision, an excessive sensitivity to light, and blurred vision.

Depending on the parts of the eyes affected, uveitis can be categorized into different forms as given below.

Anterior uveitis:

Anterior uveitis occurs when the front of the eyes called the iris is affected. That is why; it is also called iritis. Iritis is the commonest form of uveitis that is known to affect even healthy people. It can affect one or both the eyes at once. The use of Ayurveda natural herbs for iritis may reduce the pain, redness, and swelling caused due to this condition. [3]

Intermediate Uveitis:

Intermediate uveitis affects the middle part of the eyes called the pars plana. It is also called iridocyclitis. This form of uveitis usually affects the patients who suffer from an autoimmune disease like multiple sclerosis or lupus.

The use of herbs like Giloy that regulate the immune functions [4] may be beneficial to control the symptoms of intermediate and granulomatous uveitis. These herbs may control the abnormal response of the immune system to the body’s own cells thereby may help preventing damage or inflammation in the eyes and other tissues of the body.

Posterior Uveitis:

Posterior uveitis, also called choroiditis, affects the posterior part of the eyes called the choroid. The tissues and the arteries in this part of the eyes hold more importance as they deliver blood to the posterior side of the eye. This form of uveitis is more common in the people having an infection due to a virus, or fungi.

It may also occur in the patients suffering from an autoimmune disorder. Ayurvedic herbs may be used to reduce the risk of infections. The herbs recommended by the Indian medicine may works by strengthening the body’s response to the pathogens. [5]

An improperly managed uveitis can result in a higher risk of complications including cataracts, and glaucoma. Ayurvedic treatments and management, which involve the use of herbs and food that are non-inflammatory, immunity boosting in nature may help in the prevention of these complications.

Natural Ayurvedic Herbs Useful in Uveitis

Here is the list of Ayurvedic herbs, which may help to reduce swelling, redness and other symptoms of this uveitis conditions.

Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia): Giloy can be used for the eyelid inflammation treatment. It may acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and reduces pain, redness, and swelling in the eyes. [6]

Licorice: Licorice root has been traditionally used to control the symptoms of chronic uveitis. Research conducted by Jeong Mo Han, and Yun Jong Lee and published in the Korean Journal of Ophthalmalgy Ophthalmology in 2012 has shown that this herb may reduce inflammation in the eyes and regulate the immune system response thereby  could able to reduce the risk of complications associated with uveitis.

Bakuchi (Psoralia corylifolia): Ayurvedic practitioner may advise you to use Bakuchi to prevent the complications of uveitis linked to infections. It may also reduce pain in the eyes by acting as a natural analgesic agent.

Turmeric: Turmeric may help in treatment for uveitis symptoms by acting as an anti-inflammatory, anti-infective, and immunity-boosting agent.

Uveitis Natural Treatment In Ayurveda

Uveitis treatment in Ayurveda involves the use of herbs and eye treatment called Akshi- Tarpan which may be helpful in the improvement in normal health and functions of the eyes [10]. Ayurveda may also offers management for the autoimmune uveitis by recommending herbs that may regulate the functions and response of the immune cells. The treatment may be coupled with an ayurvedic diet, which includes the foods may that may prevent inflammation and infections.

  • I had an absolute life changing experience with Taking an Ayurvedic approach for coming out of my son’s eczema. We were struggling with eczema and other skin concerns for my 4 year old almost since his birth. Had tried all sorts of creams available in the market but every time the flareups were coming back . It is only until Someone recommended us Dr. Gurnam Saini and we were put on Ayurvedic healing path. In 4-5 months his eczema started going away; some stubborn eczema spots disappeared with no flareups, itchiness . I will highly recommend Ayurvedic holistic healing over western medicines.

  • I decided to take my 10 yr old daughter to Dr Saini after 9.5 yrs of struggling with eczema and food intolerances, and no solutions found but topical, long term use of cortisone creams. After only one month, we saw massive improvements in her skin, finally clearing up the majority of her eczema. This was done with herbal capsules and without needing to remove various foods from her diet. That improvement allowed us to tackle other health concerns like her consistent disturbed sleep. Now 4 months on, her skin is perfect, and her sleep is mostly uninterrupted. Any sporadic nighttime waking is for a very short period of time. And even better, now we can focus on her digestion which is my last concern for her. I can’t recommend Ayurvedic medicine enough to gently and naturally heal and balance out your body. l had done lots of reading on Ayurveda before we tried it, and all my expectations have been met and I’m sure will be exceeded in the near future. Thank you Dr Saini, for your kind and gentle consultations, and genuine interest in better health outcomes for your patients.

  • I started to get depressive mood and nightmares since diagnosed with varicocele and hydrocele. Specialist recommended me getting coil embolization to block the veins. I was hesitant with the idea of it and ignored his advice. I thought I would try with natural approach to deal with my health issues. After reading online I started to make healthy changes in my life-style and food regime e.g. avoiding inflammatory and junk food, energy drinks etc. Also reduced smoking and alcohol for 3 months. But my pain and swelling in the scrotal area did not improve. More over I started to get lack of libido, premature ejaculation and erectile difficulties. Due to that I started to remain frustrated and angry most of the time. My relationship with my family members, friends and partner started to get difficult. Finally came across Dr Saini ayurvedic medicine clinic in Melbourne. Had a detial consult with Dr Saini. His Ayurveda approach for varicocele and its related problem worked like magic for me. First month he modified my life-style and food, based on my ayurvedic makeup. He also introduced some his own blends of organic herbs and spices with daily breathing exercise. In second month I did panchakarma detoxification. Now there is no pain or swelling in my scrotal area. My manpower is back to normal (even better than earlier), having grounded emotions and sound sleep with best physical and mental health. I highly recommend everyone to follow ayurvedic life style and its natural way of healing your body. Dr Saini is best in his job.
